The reality
British summers are changing. Faster than most of us expected.
The UK recorded its hottest ever temperature in July 2022 — 40.3°C. The summer of 2023 brought weeks of sustained heat that overwhelmed hospitals, buckled railway lines, and killed thousands of people across Europe. These aren’t anomalies anymore. They’re the new baseline.
Heat-related illness is now a serious and growing public health issue in the UK. For many households, air conditioning has moved from luxury to necessity — and that shift is only going in one direction.

The tension
We’re not going to pretend there isn’t one.
Air conditioning uses electricity. More AC in more homes means more demand on the grid. In a country where the electricity mix still includes fossil fuels, that has a carbon cost. We know this.
The honest position
We believe that as UK summers get hotter, home cooling will become a health and safety necessity for millions of people — not a luxury. The question isn't whether people will install AC. It's whether the industry helps them do it as responsibly as possible. We think it should. That's why Temlo exists the way it does.
Modern inverter AC systems are dramatically more efficient than the units installed even five years ago. An A+++ rated split system uses a fraction of the energy of older technology. Every system we install is selected for efficiency — not just performance.
What we do about it
Four commitments. All of them real.
Give back to the planet
A portion of every sale goes back to the planet — funding environmental projects that fight climate change. Built into our business model, not bolted on.
A-rated systems only
We specify A-rated or above equipment on every installation. We don't install cheap, inefficient units — even when a customer asks. Energy efficiency is non-negotiable.
Inverter technology
All systems use inverter compressor technology — running at reduced power once target temperature is reached. Up to 40% more efficient than fixed-speed alternatives.
Low GWP refrigerants
We try to only install systems using R-32 or equivalent low global warming potential refrigerants. We don't install systems using R-410A, which has a GWP of 2,088.
OUR COMMITMENT
Temlo’s climate commitment
Temlo contributes 1% of its revenue to carbon removal through Stripe Climate — the carbon removal programme built directly into our payment infrastructure. No manual transfers, no annual pledges. It happens on every transaction, automatically.
Putting our money where our mouth is
1% of Temlo revenue is automatically routed to carbon removal on payment. Verified by Stripe. No certificates, no greenwashing — just money going to projects that physically pull CO₂ from the atmosphere.
How we install responsibly
The details matter.
A-rated energy efficiency on every system
EU energy label A-rating or above as a minimum. We specify the most efficient unit for the room size — not the cheapest available.
Inverter compressor technology
Variable speed inverter compressors reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared to on/off fixed-speed systems. All systems we install use this technology.
R-32 refrigerant
R-32 has a global warming potential of 675 — less than a third of R-410A (GWP 2,088). All new systems we install use R-32 or equivalent low-GWP alternatives.
F-Gas compliant refrigerant handling
Every refrigerant charge and recovery handled by REFCOM-certified engineers. No refrigerant released to atmosphere.
Smart control compatibility
All systems we install are compatible with smart thermostats and scheduling controls — so customers can minimise energy use when cooling isn't needed.
One more thing
We’re honest about what we can and can’t control.
We can specify efficient equipment. We can choose low-GWP refrigerants. We can donate to environmental projects. What we can’t do is change the carbon intensity of the UK electricity grid — though that’s improving year on year as renewables grow.
If you want to minimise the environmental impact of your AC system, the most effective thing you can do alongside installation is switch to a renewable electricity tariff. On a 100% renewable tariff, your AC system’s operational carbon footprint drops to near zero.
We’ll always be honest about where our influence ends and yours begins. That feels like the right way to do this.
