Most UK homeowners pay between £1,800 and £5,500 for a residential AC installation in 2026, depending on the system type and property. Here’s what to expect at each level.

Single room installation costs

A single room split system is the most common residential AC installation in the UK. One outdoor condenser, one indoor wall unit, connected by refrigerant pipework. Suitable for a bedroom, living room, or home office.

The equipment cost varies significantly by brand. A mid-range Samsung or Panasonic unit sits at the lower end. A premium Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric unit — which offer better efficiency ratings, quieter operation, and longer warranties — pushes toward the top of the range.

Multi-room installation costs

Multi-room systems share one outdoor condenser across two or more indoor units. The outdoor unit is a fixed cost — adding more indoor units increases price, but not as much as installing entirely separate systems.

What affects the final cost?

The ranges above cover most standard installations. Several factors can push a quote above or below the typical range — all of which your installer will identify during a site visit.

Wall Construction

Solid brick walls require core drilling, which takes longer than drilling through cavity or timber frame walls. Adds £50–£150 to labour in most cases.

Pipe Run Distance

Standard installations assume a pipe run of up to 5 metres. Longer distances require more refrigerant pipework and additional labour. Every extra metre adds approximately £20–£40.

Outdoor Unit Placement

Ground level or low wall mounting is simplest. Roof mounting or high wall positions require additional fixings, brackets, and sometimes access equipment — adding £100–£300.

Property type

Period properties, listed buildings, and top-floor flats often require more careful planning for pipe routing and unit placement. Listed buildings also require listed building consent before any external work.

Location

London installations typically run 10–15% above national averages due to higher labour rates. Other major UK cities are generally in line with the ranges above.
